Kuching - a paradise for gourmets, especially for street food, because most dishes here are much less than in other cities. Start a culinary journey with Seng Kee in Chinatown, which features a large selection of soups with fish, pork satay, lacquer sauce, Chinese rice porridge with salted egg and canned vegetables and even adventurous kueh cup - slowly stewed pork ribs. On the nearby Padungan road there are always many varieties of noodles, served with a stunning Kolo-mi, a favorite local dish made with minced pork and noodles.

At night, crowds of tourists and locals go to Bukit Mata Street. This is a huge outdoor patio on the roof of the car park. More than 500 visitors sit at common tables, ordering from neon stalls of seafood live crabs, shrimp, shellfish, squirming squid, perch, pomfret and parrot fish. But what's really interesting in Kuching is the rediscovery of the cuisine of the indigenous Sarawak tribes in creative restaurants, such as Lepau (395 Ban Hock Road) and Dyak (29 Simpang Tiga Road). Dishes of these establishments include the Lulun decoy (chicken, braised in bamboo with tapioca leaves and spicy herbs); Umay (thinly sliced ​​river fish, marinated ceviche); and vegetables such as kanquq manis (leaves of gooseberry) and midin (wild ferns).

The guidebooks rarely mention the place Bau, whose night market Siniawan Night Market, located in the abandoned gold mining settlement, will present an unusual experience for gourmets. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from sunset to 11 pm, this coastal ghost town comes to life when dozens of food stalls are opened, where noodles and vegetables are fried, delicious fish, chicken wings and satay are cooked. At the tables, arranged along the main street under the red Chinese lanterns, hundreds of hungry visitors are dining.

In the largest city on the island of Borneo and the capital of the state of Sarawak, Kuching, the buildings of the colonial era coexist with modern office towers. With its busy promenade and sights such as Astana, the former white Rajas palace, Kuching is known as a clean, safe city for tourists. There are several theories about how the city got its name. It was formed as a trading post by the family of Sir James Brooke, the first of the "white Rajahs" who ruled Sarawak for a century. Just 20 years ago Kuching was a backwater where tourists hardly interrupted their journey en route to the rainforests and the national parks of Borneo.

Today Kuching is a popular holiday destination in Malaysia, with a slight reminder of the time when Asian cities were not crowded with crowds of tourists, pollution and skyscrapers. Most travelers prefer to visit the city in the drier months of the year, from June to August.
